Visual Distortions near a Neutron Star and Black Hole
نویسنده
چکیده
The visual distortion effects visible to an observer traveling around and descending to the surface of an extremely compact star are described. Specifically, trips to a “normal” neutron star, a black hole, and an ultracompact neutron star with extremely high surface gravity, are described. Concepts such as multiple imaging, redand blue-shifting, conservation of surface brightness, the photon sphere, and the existence of multiple Einstein rings are discussed in terms of what the viewer would see. Computer generated, general relativistically accurate illustrations highlighting the distortion effects are presented and discussed. A short movie (VHS) depicting many of these effects is available to those interested free of charge.

Massive disk formation in the tidal disruption of a neutron star by a nearly extremal black hole
Black hole–neutron star (BHNS) binaries are important sources of gravitational waves for second-generation interferometers, and BHNS mergers are also a proposed engine for short, hard gamma-ray bursts. The behavior of both the spacetime (and thus the emitted gravitational waves) and the neutron star matter in a BHNS merger depend strongly and nonlinearly on the black hole’s spin. While there is...

We discuss three different ways to arrive at kaon condensation at nc ≃ 3n0 where n0 is nuclear matter density: (1) Fluctuating around the n = 0 vacuum in chiral perturbation theory, (2) fluctuating around nVM near the chiral restoration density nχ where the vector manifestation of hidden local symmetry is reached and (3) fluctuating around the Fermi liquid fixed point at ∼ n0. They all share on...
متن کاملBlack Hole-Neutron Star Mergers as Central Engines of Gamma-Ray Bursts.
Hydrodynamic simulations of the merger of stellar mass black hole-neutron star binaries are compared with mergers of binary neutron stars. The simulations are Newtonian but take into account the emission and back-reaction of gravitational waves. The use of a physical nuclear equation of state allows us to include the effects of neutrino emission. For low neutron star-to-black hole mass ratios, ...

We report here the non-detection of gravitational waves from the merger of binary–neutron star systems and neutron star–black hole systems during the first observing run of the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitationalwave Observatory (LIGO). In particular, we searched for gravitational-wave signals from binary–neutron star systems with component masses Î M 1, 3 [ ] and component dimensionl...
